"Reflecting on the Call to Serve"

This past year's co-chairs were Bill Licea-Kane and Kay Snowden.

How have you chosen to serve others? What meaning does it hold in your life? Service can be a powerful way to connect with one another across generations, beliefs, and cultures. Adam Davis, Senior Research and Teaching Associate with the Project on Civic Reflection and editor of Hearing the Call Across Traditions: Readings on Faith and Service, will lead us in the practice of civic reflection, a series of conversations that starts with short, thought-provoking readings and gradually opens up onto larger questions about civic engagement.

Our week will also include workshops in music, yoga, and photography; time to read, swim, walk and explore this beautiful island; and favorite evening activities — all optional. This conference is a magical place for children! Please join us for a week of reflection, relaxation, amazing youth programs, and the opportunity to share a precious week with one another. We especially welcome “new shoalers!”

Workshops and Starbursts:

The Beatles: A Journey Tim Riley Tim Riley's Beatle workshop will cover the band's 7-year output of recordings as chronicled by his 1988 book TELL ME WHY. Riley is a classically-trained pianist who uses his musical smarts to interpret why Beatle recordings remain so contemporary, and continue to exert strong influence on every rock career since the 1960s. Through close listenings, readings from celebrated critics, and group discussions, we'll explore the world of Beatle recordings to enhance everybody's appreciation of this challenging catalog. Tim's Bio: NPR CRITIC, AUTHOR, PIANIST, and SPEAKER TIM RILEY reviews pop and classical music for NPR's HERE AND NOW, and has written for the HUFFINGTON POST, THE WASHINGTON POST, SLATE.COM and SALON.COM. He was trained as a classical pianist at Oberlin and Eastman, and remains among the few critics who writes about both "high" and "low" culture and their overlapping concerns. Brown University sponsored Riley as Critic-In Residence in 2008, and his first book, Tell Me Why: A Beatles Commentary (Knopf/Vintage 1988), was hailed by the New York Times as bringing "new insight to the act we've known for all these years..." A staple author in college courses on rock culture, he gave a keynote address at BEATLES 2000, the first international academic conference in JyvÃ¤skylÃ¤, Finland. Since condemning the rap group Public Enemy for anti-semitic remarks in his 1990 Boston PHOENIX column, Riley has given lively multi-media lectures at colleges and cultural centers like the Chautauqua Festival on "Censorship in the Arts," and "Rock History." His current projects include the music metaportal, the RILEY ROCK INDEX.com, the Norton Rock Reader, and a major new biography of JOHN ONO LENNON for W.W. Norton (2010).	Star Yoga Michael Kersten Michael Kersten is a practitioner and instructor of yoga asana, meditation, and philosophy. He has trained with esteemed yogi Shri Dharma Mittra since 1997 and developed as a teacher under his guidance. Michael deepened his practice of meditation in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition, studying primarily under Dr. Reggie Ray in the lineage of Chőgyam Trungpa Rinpoche, in both group and solitary retreat practice, and holds a Masters in Tibetan Buddhism from Naropa University. Currently a spiritual care counselor for hospice in New York City, Michael has led yoga workshops throughout the country and in Europe. For the Star conference, expect a variety of offerings, for all levels, ages, and abilities, from fluid and warming vinyasa to playful partner yoga to exploring meditative stillness in poses.
Art and The Edge Kendall Dudley Here we are surrounded by water and land, past and present, the seen and unseen, and by using paint, clay, cloth and natural objects, we’ll have fun exploring what they evoke in us. Designed for any level of artistic experience, taste and desire, this art week invites you to work with your own ideas or pick up new ones. Using paper and paint, words and objects, memory and the current moment, we’ll create a zesty climate for art of all kinds to emerge and offer a variety of tools with which to express them. A frequent presenter at national conferences, universities, retreat centers, and community organizations, he designs events that blend art and ritual around themes of creativity, the discovery and pursuit of meaningful work, and the celebration of life transitions. For years he’s been designing interactive public art projects and in 2010 received a Massachusetts Cultural Council grant for his work in support of educating women and children in Afghanistan. A partial product of Penn and Columbia, his major inspirations come from having lived in the Middle East, studies in Islamic architecture, painting late into the night, contemporary German artists, the music of Moby and the joy of friends and family. For more, check out www.kendalldudley.com	Star Improvisation Peter Berkrot For our Star Improvisation Workshop, we will begin simply, using non-verbal cues and exercises designed to boost spontaneity and confidence. The emphasis will NOT be on performance but on listening, observation and the ability to live in the moment. Working alone, in pairs, and in groups, student actors will find the joy and a new perspective of soaring along without the restraints of text while making intimate connections on stage. A veteran of stage and screen, Peter’s career spans four decades. Highlights include feature roles in “Caddyshack”, Showtime’s “Brotherhood” and appearances on “America’s Most Wanted” and “Unsolved Mysteries”. His voice can be heard on television, radio, videogames, documentaries and industrials. He is a prominent acting coach and a regular contributor to the award winning news program, “Frontline” produced by WGBH in Boston. For the Emmy-nominated, “The Truth About Cancer”, Peter served as the Director of Narration As an audiobook narrator, his most recent titles include three books for audible.com by Peter Hessler; “Country Driving”, “Oracle Bones” and “River Town” and “When The Whistle Blows” and “Revolver” for Brilliance Audio. For Tantor Audio, he has narrated the current bestseller “Seven Events That Made America America” by Larry Schweikert, “Death Is a Lonely Business” by Ray Bradbury and “The Girls of Murder City” by Douglas Perry (due out in August) and “Our Patchwork Nation” by Dante Chinni and James Gimpel being released in September. Digital Photography Jeff Barnett-Winsby Taking better pictures using your digital camera. In this workshop we will cover some remedial basics for those who are interested as well as talk about how to shoot, process, manage, and share your digital images. This work shop will be Wednesday and Thursday and will incorporate photographing outside, group discussion, and tutorials. Please bring your camera (and manual,) laptop, transfer cable, and anything you would like help with. Jeff Barnett-Winsby is a Kansas native and recent NYC re-locater. He holds an MFA from the Rhode Island School of Design in photography and is an adjunct professor, artist, commercial photographer, and cinematographer. His first book, Mark West and Molly Rose, published through J&L Books, arrives on shelves in March 2010.

Hand Colored Photos with Tammy Alfano Learn how to turn your photographs into a work of art! Hand coloring black and white photographs is fun and easy to learn. Colored photographs are perfect to display or give as gifts. This Starburst will explain how to select, prepare, and print your digital photos. Materials will be provided for hands-on instruction so that each attendee can complete a hand colored memory from Star Island suitable for framing.	Gift Box Folding With Sam Francis and Gail Henry Learn how to make use of those greeting cards you find too pretty to throw away. Sam Francis will show you a simple origami folding technique that you can use with cards, cardstock and papers to make small gift boxes. This is a great craft for personal use, but also good if you work with youth groups or have children of any age. This is an intergenerational starburst and all ages are welcome. (under 7 with a partner over 12).
